Peter Hirst has spent the past several years researching and documenting alternatives to the John Muir Trail, other trails and practical routes of equal grandeur between Yosemite and the Mount Whitney Region. Originally inspired by the one sign on the JMT that reads John Muir “Route” rather than “Trail”, Peter conceived and developed the idea of finding, connecting and through-hiking new routes, all on decent trail and over similar spectacular High Sierra country, like the JMT from Yosemite to the Whitney region, but primarily off the JMT. In 2018, Peter completed the first such JMR, from Glacier Point to Horseshoe Meadow (passing within a few trail miles of Mount Whitney) all on decent trail or easily navigated cross-country, with over two thirds of the distance off the JMT.
